A Godly Man

In all due fairness, with yesterday’s being for young ladies, this post is especially for young men.   As I said to the guys yesterday, though, this is also helpful to young ladies to know what to be looking for in a husband.  Here are some passages that define a godly man (some of these are commands for everyone, not just guys).  This is a list I compiled of things to look for in a husband.  (I encourage each of you girls to make your own list and refer to it often.  It’s worth it! 😉 )

“Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her…   In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.  For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body…”  (taken from Ephesians 5:25-33)

* Love as Christ loved the church – and died for it.

* Love others more than himself

* Nurture (care for) and cherish (value, appreciate) others

“Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness… Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled.  Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us.” Titus 2:2, 6-8

* Sober minded, temperate, sound in faith, love, and patience.

*Demonstrating good works, integrity (honesty, gravity), dignity (self-esteem, sincerity).

* Sound speech that no one can find fault with.

“So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.  Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.”  James 1:19-21

* Swift to hear – a good listener.

* Slow to speak – makes his words count.

*Slow to anger – is not easily angered about trivial things.

*Meek – humble and gentle.

“Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel…”  1 Peter 3:7a

*Give honor (respect) to women as weaker vessels (I believe this refers to emotionally weaker, as well as physically).

“Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”  Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.  Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.  Resist him, firm in your faith…” (taken from 1 Peter 5:1-11)

* Submissive to authority

*Takes advice from older men

* Humble under God

*Know God cares and trust Him by giving Him worries.

*Sober-minded (clear thinking) and watchful – on guard for attacks of Satan.

God bless you also, my brothers, as you seek to become a man of God.
